the basis of exercise

On average, exercise is considered from two modes: cardiovascular and resistance training.  Our basis for exercise comes from these two primary modes as 'what we do' to mobilize ourselves and feel good about the attempt.  As with medication however the "dosage" of each is difficult for the average exerciser to decide and how specific to be.  Dosage for exercise comes from appropriate assessment for the specific person. In many cases cardiovascular training is misunderstood as being something we need to do for a long time!  Not true. If properly assessed an individual can achieve success with their cardiovascular system through dosed regimes in short periods of time.  Resistance training represents strength training for most.  This needs to be assessed for also, and it requires knowledge of the body's joints, mechanics of movements, posture, flexibility, injury, and capability.
Dosage for this is determined by need ie the above items + frequency.  Do not become stuck on 'fads and falsehoods' about what to do for yourself as it will end in failure and injury.  Seek a professional who knows and is educated about exercise prescription and the body systems.
